Bolivia:
Surreal Destinations

Bolivia
is a country that nature has truly favored, offering magical destinations where the sky and its colors take center stage.
Some must-visit destinations for every traveler include: Salar de Uyuni, Lake Titicaca, and the mystical Isla del Sol.

Get ready to take a trip to Salar de Uyuni, a fairytale location in the southwest of Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, covering an area of 10,000 km². This impressive salt desert was once a prehistoric lake.
Its landscape changes with the seasons, so, when is the best time to visit Salar de Uyuni? It depends on what you want to see. From December to April, during the rainy season, a thin layer of water transforms the plain into a massive mirror, perfectly reflecting the sky above.
From May to October, during the dry season, the salt flat becomes a vast white plain, marked by natural hexagonal shapes formed by the crystallization of the salt. These two contrasting landscapes blend seamlessly with the seasons and are also an important source of lithium in the world.
In the Salar de Uyuni you can also visit the Incahuasi Island, home to towering cacti and Andean flamingos
TIPS
- Bring sunglasses and sunscreen—believe it or not, the reflection of the sun on the salt is intense and can burn your skin.
- Layer your clothing and bring a cozy jacket, temperatures can drop sharply
- Wear waterproof boots if you’re visiting during the rainy season
- Don’t forget to bring water and snacks for your adventure

Located on the border between Bolivia and Peru, is the highest navigable lake in the world, the altitude of lake titicaca is 12,467 feet above sea level. It’s considered a sacred place. According to Inca legend, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, the founders of the Inca Empire, emerged from these very waters.
The lake is home to indigenous communities, islands, and breathtaking landscapes. Its deep blue waters contrast beautifully with the peaks of the Cordillera Real. Sailing on the lake gives you the opportunity to visit Aymara and Quechua villages and witness floating islands on lake titicaca made from Totora reeds, an aquatic plant native to the lake. A perfect opportunity to be part of their way of life
TIPS
- The high altitude can affect some travelers, so we recommend acclimating in La Paz first
- Drink coca tea or chew coca leaves to help alleviate altitude sickness
- Use sunscreen, UV radiation can be strong at high altitudes
- Bring warm clothes, temperatures can drop sharply at night

Isla del Sol is the heart of Lake Titicaca. According to Inca mythology, the sun was born here, making this island a sacred site for the local community.
Today, you can explore its stone paths, ancient ruins, and meet the local community. In Yumani, visit the Escalinata del Inca (Inca Stairway) and Fuente de la Juventud (Fountain of Youth). In Chincana Sagrada Roca, you can connect with the island’s pre-Columbian past.
Without roads or vehicles, this is the perfect place to disconnect from reality and immerse yourself in nature.
TIPS
- Be prepared to walk! The terrain is uneven, and trails are for walking only
- Bring cash with you, as there are no ATMs on the island
