Ecuador:
The Mystery of the Highlands

Ecuador The Mistery of the Highlands Chimborazo volcano

There are countless hidden stories among the
majestic Ecuadorian highlands–stories of battles,
wisdom, and the prosperity of the communities that thrived in harmony with nature, remaining strong over time. These communities knew how to become one with the environment, where the heights, the climate, and certain species were their allies.

A trip to the Ecuador Highlands is a journey through colorful landscapes dominated by greens, blues, and celestial whites. You will breathe fresh, pure air, feel the gentle whisper of the wind, and experience a variety of climates in a single day, without extremes, but almost perfect.

You’ll encounter cosmopolitan cities and charming
little villages nestled between mountains, volcanoes,
snow-capped peaks, and winding rivers. And most
importantly, you’ll meet people who, despite facing
obstacles, have not forgotten to smile and look on
the bright side of life.

So, if you decide to travel to the Ecuadorian
Highlands but you don’t have much time, we
recommend visiting some of the most iconic places,
known for their beauty:

Otavalo, the Cultural Heart of The Andes

Ecuador The Mistery of the Highlands Otavalo Culture

Otavalo is one of the most vibrant cities, where the strength of the indigenous culture is evident. Its population is one of the most deeply rooted in the country. The culture is kept alive through weaving, painting, jewelry, and colors, thanks to the skill in producing 100% handmade handicrafts.

You can find all this art at La Plaza de los Ponchos. The Otavalo market is world-famous and has been a hub of indigenous trade since before the arrival of the Spanish.

Tip: if you want to buy some
souvenirs, don’t forget to
negotiate the price. It’s part of
the experience, but remember
to do it respectfully.

Ecuador The Mistery of the Highlands Cuicocha Lagoon

Cuicocha Lagoon:
The Crater that Whispers Stories

Just a few miles away, you’ll find a lagoon inside a volcanic crater, with two islands at its center that seem to float on the emerald waters. Its name, Cuicocha, means “Guinea Pig Lake” in Quechua, the native language. The name comes from the shape of the islands, which resemble the little creature. By the way, guinea pig is a traditional dish in Andean cuisine.

Tip: Bring a windbreaker jacket, as the weather can change rapidly.

Quilotoa: The Lake of a Thousand Colors

If there’s one breathtaking place, it’s Quilotoa Lake,
located in another volcanic crater! The water is primarily turquoise but changes color depending on the sunlight and the mineral content. The view from the crater’s rim is stunning, and hiking down is even better.

Locals believe the lagoon is bottomless and connected to the sea by underground rivers.

Tip: Bring a bottle of water and a windbreaker jacket. Hiking down may be easier than hiking back up, and as with all of the Ecuadorian Highlands, the weather is unpredictable.

Cotopaxi National Park:
The White Giant

One of Ecuador’s most iconic volcanoes, Cotopaxi is one of the highest and still active, standing at 19,347 feet. It has erupted over 50 times in the past 300 years, but it’s closely monitored today to ensure visitor safety. Its snowy cap is simply captivating.

Another attraction in the area is Limpiopungo Lake, a beautiful, magical mirror that reflects the volcano in its calm waters. It’s a place where, if you’re lucky, you may spot birds and rabbits

Tip: The altitude can be a challenge, so bring ginger candies with you, and dress in layers. The weather is usually cold and can sometimes get even chillier.
